I Armagnac - Marquis de Montesquiou
The Art of the Master Cellar,
Armagnac - like any other alcohol - does not age when bottled. Contrary to wine, it does not improve when in bottles. It is the Master Cellar who evaluates the maturity of these brandies when still in barrels, and it is he or she who decides when bottling will take place.
Exceptional years will be bottled with the date of the harvest indicated on the label. These are the vintages, the quintessence of armagnac. These great bottles are usually enjoyed by true connaisseurs.
Aside from the vintages - which only concern one part of the vineyard's production - the Marquis de Montesquiou domain has been offering other types of Armagnac brandies for generations. These varieties are obtained by maintening total control over blends. A blend is a marriage of two or more brandies, mixed by the Master Cellar and chosen for their complimentary qualities. This is the entire art of the Master Cellar.
